Zoals je merkt verblijf ik bij een gastgezin. Ik heb hen gevonden via de website homestaybooking.com. Het concept is een beetje zoals gastenkamers in Duitsland: voor de prijs per nacht (heel erg goedkoop in vergelijking met een jeugdherberg of een gewoon hotel) krijg je een kamer met ontbijt en in veel gevallen zelfs nog volledig gebruik van de gezinskeuken en wasmachine. De familie waar ik verblijf had drie kamers met aparte badkamers (vandaar dat ik bij hen geboekt heb – een keuken delen vind ik helemaal niet erg, maar een badkamer dat is iets anders). Ik zal wel zien in hoeverre dat een goeie formule is .

Weer naar Dublin

Beste iedereen,

Vanaf maandagavond 12 september vertoef ik weer voor een hele periode in Dublin. Het plan is om veel onderzoek te doen en lezingen bij te wonen (maar vooral veel onderzoek doen, zodat ik het Ierse deel van mijn onderzoek kan afwerken voor het einde van het jaar), maar ik zal zeker proberen om af en toe een update op de website te posten. First day at the Bodleian

So that’s the first day’s research at the Bodleian is done. Carte Manuscript 64 turns out to be a gem of a manuscript. Apart from the tine handwriting, which gave me a serious bit of trouble this morning (English secretary hand is not really what I’m used to), and the fact that half of the margins are either cut off or disappeared into the binding the contents are just spectacular. I already found a reference to two powdermakers from Namen/Namur employed by the Confederates Irish. Exactly the kind of thing I am hoping to find.

The reading room for the Special Collections is temporarily located in the Radcliffe Science Library. The fact that it is based in a basement can get to you, though. Sunlight is a vital factor for any historian (and is often forgotten, but spending the day in a room with no windows really reminds you). So I had my lunch in the botanic garden and made a couple of pictures on the way.

Arrival in Oxford

Coming Saturday, a very interesting conference on the military revolution in Britain is taking place, so I booked my trip to Oxford a while ago. And while I had to book the Eurostar anyway, I could as well spend some time in the Bodleian, so I’m here the entire week. However, it has to be said, getting from Leuven to Oxford is not as simple as it sounds. Thank goodness that the Hammersmith and City underground line did run as far as Paddington station. That at least meant one steps of stairs less. Nevertheless, Paddington station itself – for a station as important as it is – is a bit of a maze. There are a lot of works going on, that’s a fact, but in my view there are far too little chairs and there’s no bin in sight when you need one. Nevertheless, after three trains, an underground and a taxi, I finally arrived at the hotel.

As I was planning to get my reader’s ticket for the Bodleian today, I walked into town (took me an hour, but the weather is great, so I don’t really mind), arranged the ticket and made some pictures. Oxford is such a charming town! I’m almost regretting that I will spend my time inside a library. I also went on a guided tour – just to make sure that I actually see something this week. Here are some pictures for you.

Writing, Research, Writing, Research…

Even though I haven’t been working on this PhD overly long (only since the 1st of October 2010) I have already started writing one of my chapters. It probably will not be the first one, since I am the kind of researcher that does things out of order and always ends up with an end product looking very different in structure from what I had in mind. Nevertheless, this is totally okay. After all, research is as much about the journey as it is about the 100,000 words delivered at the end.

So, I have started writing the chapter on technology. At the moment I am, therefore, completely immersed in full and half canon, culverins, fauconneaux, gunpowder charges, undercarriages, the weight of shot, calibres and so on. In order to study the import of the military revolution in Ireland (or any other area for that matter) is really important, since technology has taken up such a central place in the debate surrounding the military changes in early modern Europe. Therefore it is necessary to provide some insight in the technology used in the Spanish Army of Flanders, in order to be able to provide the comparison with the technology used by the confederates. My chapter is currently about 4,000 words long, which is not alltogether that bad. Nevertheless, I feel I will need a little more pressure to be able to write faster and higher quality.

However, that pressure will soon show. While I am still spending four to five days a week in the archive in Brussels, I have a paper and a publication due at the end of June and I promised the IRCHSS to have written bits and pieces worth at least two chapters by early July. Moreover, the coming weeks are proving to be incredibly busy, as I will be in Ireland from the 18th to the 22nd of April (for graduation and library work and general meeting up with people I haven’t seen for ages), in Oxford between the 2nd and the 8th of May (Bodleian library and a conference on the military revolution in Britain) and again in Dublin somewhere around the 30th of May, as I have to present my work so far in College. And, by the way, I am also helping Simon to find a job and looking for a new apartment (without any mice and preferably with an oven). I’m afraid my paper at the PhD Colloquium will come much sooner than I think.

Jane Ohlmeyer’s nomination for Provost

In late sixteenth-century Brabant, the royal artillery caster died, leaving his wife behind with a son who was still a minor and who’s education had not been completed yet. The patent to be the only artillery caster in the city of Mechelen was to expire, since the son hadn’t reached full age yet. However, his mother did not hesitate. She wrote to the Council of Finance, who consulted with the artillery general of the Army of Flanders on the matter, requesting the patent to be assigned to her and her son until he reached the appropriate age and she would make sure his training to be completed. Everywhere in the production of powder and weapons for the Army of Flanders in the first four decades of the seventeenth-century, women took the lade after the passing of their husbands. They were the ones making sure orders of gunpowder, muskets, pikes, canon and so on were delivered and promptly assured the institutions that they were able to handle new orders, even without their husbands around.

Apparently, in the seventeenth century, this was not uncommon. And, after all, why should it be? If women had been at the head of the Army of Flanders, things would probably have not gone wrong. After all, why should you lead an army any differently than a household? There is no time to loose and you might as well save some money here and there. The same holds true for leading a university the size of Trinity College. My supervisor, Jane Ohlmeyer, has been nominated for the position of Provost. The election will take place on the 2nd of April 2011. Seeing that she’s the person you need to get things done, that she is capable of securing funds for research in amounts that you can hardly imagine, that she is an absolutely wonderful teacher and a lovely person in general, I absolutely back her nomination. Moreover, she is the only women nominated. And if women in the seventeenth-century have already proven they could do typically male jobs like casting artillery for an army, then Jane Ohlmeyer will most definitely prove to be a capable leader for a University of international standing as Trinity College.

Chaos

Beste iedereen,

Momenteel is het een beetje chaotisch in mijn doctoraatsonderzoek. Dat komt vast omdat ik aan alle onderdelen tegelijk bezig ben en zowel bezig ben met secundaire literatuur als met archiefonderzoek. En dat is allemaal het einde van de wereld niet, maar ik heb ook nog een huishouden en dat vind ik behoorlijk moeilijk te combineren. Want tijdens de weekends ga ik naar huis, dus ik doe geen boodschappen (of toch nauwelijks) dus dat moet dan wachten tot de maandag en nu zitten we met muizen op onze studio en hebben we de hele nacht geen oog dichtgedaan omdat er allemaal kleine voetjes over de vloer lopen en tandjes gaatjes knagen en zo. En nu zijn we dus bezorgd dat de muis die we dachten gevangen te hebben ontstnapt is en we dus geen bewijs meer hebben dat er muizen binnengekomen zijn. En dus moet ik eigenlijk ook nog muizenvallen gaan kopen, waardoor ik dus weer niet aan het doctoraat werk . Foei :s.

Het leven zoals het is… doctoreren

Dag iedereen,

Ik weet het, het is inderdaad weer veel te lang geleden. Dat komt er natuurlijk van als je twintigduizend dingen tegelijk probeert te doen . Ondertussen ben ik anderhalve maand terug in Leuven (God, ik hou van Leuven. Wat een verademing na de drukte van Dublin!) en al een dikke maand bezig met mijn doctoraat. Meteen na aankomst was het alle hens aan dek om alle papieren in orde te brengen – bankrekeningen, verblijfspapieren voor Simon, bibliotheekkaart en zo van die toestanden, maar dat is ondertussen wel wat gekalmeerd. Gelukkig.

Dus ja, nu kan ik mij concentreren op mijn doctoraat en alles wat daarbij komt kijken. Aanvankelijk was dat terug in de bib gaan logeren – weer het vijfde verdiep, maar deze keer van de Letterenbib in plaats van de Ussher Library. Bibliografie opstellen, inlezen (mijn God, The Road to Rocroi van Fernando Gonzalez de Leon was zo goed!) en dergelijke meer. Kortom, de normale procedure. Vervolgens heb ik mij met Brendan Jennings’ werk beziggehouden, dat documenten uit het Algemeen Rijksarchief samenbrengt in vertaling – en vaak ook samenvatting. Ideaal is dat niet, want ik ga er niet van uit dat die mens alles heeft doorgenomen en ook alles correct heeft vertaald, maar het is een vertrekpunt, en uiteindelijk is dat ook van belang. Op 28 oktober heb ik samen met Jane Ohlmeyer (mijn promotor) en Violet Soen (prof aan de KUL) een workshop gegeven over de adel en oorlog, waarbij ik geprobeerd heb om mijn thesis samen te vatten in 20 min – heel frustrerend, als je ‘t mij vraagt, eerst vier-vijf maanden aan iets werken en het dan in 20 minuten samenvatten . Nu ja, dat onderbrak mijn doctoraatsritme wel een beetje, want ik had al ruim een maand mijn thesis afgewerkt en was met een ander project begonnen en het zat een beetje ver. Daarna was het ook wel wat lastig om opnieuw op gang te komen. Door 1 en 2 november was alles gesloten, dus moest ik thuis werken en dat ligt mij eigenlijk niet zo erg – zeker niet als je moet koken en de rest van het huishouden je aanstaart.

Vorige week ben ik dan eindelijk weer ‘ns in het archief geraakt. Het resultaat van de verbouwingen is indrukwekkend (vind ik toch). De laatste keer dat ik er was, in april 2009, waren die nog niet afgewerkt, maar nu zijn er dus stoelen die je omhoog en omlaag kunt zetten (wat geen overbodige luxe is als je niet al te groot bent en je een gigantisch dikke band voor je op tafel krijgt – ik spreek uit ervaring) en bureaulampen op elke tafel. In de kelden zijn de zeteltjes ook verplaatst, zodat je tenminste niet meer onder (jaja, onder!) de trap moet gaan zitten om je boterhammetjes op te eten. Een hele verbetering als je ‘t mij vraagt.

En inhoudelijk loopt het ook wel snor met mijn doctoraat. Het is behoorlijk uitdagend om alles binnen de drie jaar af te krijgen (nog 35 maanden dus). In Brussel alleen heb ik nu al 11 blzn bibliografie en ik ben nog niet eens aan de Rekenkamer toegekomen. In Simancas zal er ook behoorlijk veel zitten, maar daar moet ik nog gedetailleerde inventarissen van doornemen, dus ik heb er nog geen precies zicht op. In Amsterdam zit er ook heel veel. Het archief van de Amsterdamse notarissen (waarin ik hoop export van wapens en munitie naar Ierland terug te vinden) heeft een inventaris van maar liefst 1240 blzn. Een heel werk alleen om je nog maar doorheen die inventaris heen te werken.

Maar kom, we komen er wel. Ik probeer af en toe deze blog nog wel eens up te daten – vooral dan over mijn doctoraat, want de Trinity heeft een driejarig vervolg gekregen. Erg regelmatig zal het vast niet zijn. Het druk hebben is ook deel van het leven van een doctoraatsstudent. Maar dat vind ik helemaal niet erg .
